ICD Alloys and Metals

Day in the Life – Cory Southern

Cory Southern – Production Supervisor

I’ve been with ICD Alloys and Metals for 5 years now. It’s my job to make sure all the crews are working on the right orders, and that things are going out at the right times.

It can get very busy, so my role is basically to coordinate activity – who needs to do what and when, and what’s the best way to do it? We have to be really well organized.

I take care of the production side of the business, supervising a team of five who work across ten machines. The team have their own stations but they’ll move around the different machines as needed – we all do whatever’s required to get the job done on time and to a high standard.

It’s a fast-moving environment and things change every day. The priorities on any given day will depend on customer requirements, what jobs we’ve got coming in and what jobs need to go out.

Sometimes we can be working on the same job for 3-4 days, and sometimes we’ll finish 3 or 4 in a day. It can be challenging to get last minute orders in – they often turn our plans upside down and we have to juggle orders and priorities to get them done.

Once the team have finished a job, I pack it up and fill out the job card, then it’s ready to go out.

I enjoy the job very much, and I’m lucky to work with such a great group of people. It’s a very supportive environment.

Whenever I’m not at work, I try to be outside. I particularly enjoy fishing – I like the peace and quiet.
